1562	Frenchman Jean Ribault explores mouth of St. Johns River in Florida and settles unsuccessfully at Charlesfort, S.C.
1563	Menendez is accused of numerous infractions and is imprisoned in Seville.
1564	Frenchman Rene de Laudonniere builds Fort Caroline at the mouth of the St. Johns River, thereby challenging the title to Florida.
1565	Pedro Menendez is released from prison. King Phillip sends him to the New World to drive out the French from Spanish territory. He establishes St. Augustine and defeats the French at Fort Caroline and Matanzas Inlet.
1567	Menendez returns to Spain.
1568	A French force commanded by Dominique De Gourges joined with local Indian warriors and together they destroyed the Spanish fort at San Mateo (originally Fort Caroline)
1577-80	Francis Drake (Great Britain) circumnavigates the World in the "Golden Hind"
1580	Coquina discovered on Anastasia Island.
1585	Sir Walter Raleigh (Great Britain) attempts a first settlement on Roanoke Island.
1586	Sir Francis Drake captures Santa Domingo and Cartegena. He sails up the Florida coast and burns St. Augustine, taking all the treasure stored there.
1588	Spain orders her Armada to invade England in order to insure Catholic religious uniformity by designating a Catholic sovereign for England.
1607	Englishmen settle Jamestown.
1638-40	Appalachian Indians captured and sent to St. Augustine to labor on public projects.
1667	England's Carolina grant of 1665 amended to include Florida land all the way south to New Smyrna, comprising even St. Augustine.
1668	English pirate Robert Searles sacks St. Augustine, but fails to capture the wooden fort.
1669	Queen Regent Mariana of Spain orders the construction of a stone fort in St. Augustine.
